Voluntary Work
National Regatta

I was always cognisant of the popularity of the regatta which takes place here in Malta, however I never managed to be part of its organisation.  When the opportunity came I was one of the team of helpers for this regatta event which took place on the 31st of March, 2015.  On the day of the event I was aware of the work involved before and during the actual day and between one race and another.  I understood the role of time keepers, judges and of the discipline board.  Most of all, I learned how much this event means to the participants and spectators.  This experience continued to widen my spectrum regarding different sports, especially since the regatta is a traditional sport in Malta.

As part of one of my fourth year assignments I decided to do voluntary work at St. Joseph’s Home, St. Venera.  This is a boys’ home accommodating a total of 15 boys between the ages of 9 and 23, which for one reason or another could not live at home.  The boys living in St. Joseph’s Home need lots of support to overcome family traumas they unfortunately went through.  The title which I gave to this voluntary work project was ‘Reaching out children in St. Joseph’s Home through Sports.’  I worked with six children at St. Joseph’s Home where I organised diverse fun games and sport activities for them.  My aim was to help these children build important values and skills such as teamwork, sportsmanship, respect and effort through sports and physical activity.  This experience enhanced my empathy skills.  Volunteering helped me to connect more to the community around me.  Dedicating some of my time to these children aided me to boost my social skills and it expanded my network of friends.

As part of one of my second year assignments we decided to establish a Wheelchair Basketball event in collaboration with Breaking Limits Malta.  The event was a huge success since we managed to collect a good sum of money for this organisation while promoting the sport of wheelchair basketball together with some of the best Maltese athletes in this discipline.  Through such event I managed to gain a better understanding of the adaptations present in such sport.  I also enhanced my organisational, management and communication skills.

In the reference letter written by Mr. Sultana, one can read that I involved myself in several school activities such as refereeing football matches, refereeing basketball games and also assisted Form 1 classes on a football-related outing at Luxol Sports Ground.  During my third teaching practice experience, I continued to involve myself in school activities and helped out in the everyday running of tournaments especially through refereeing.  Such involvement in school activities and outings helped me to build a better relationship with both students and staff within the school.  I also acquired experience regarding refereeing within certain sport disciplines.  In addition, the football-related school outing was beneficial through the different football and coordination exercises students were encouraged to perform and which I can implement at school during Physical Education lessons.

I also took part in an activity called 'Discovering University in the Three Cities' which took place in Cospicua, Malta.  This event comprised the promotion of different traditional games which are becoming less popular with the passing of time.  My University colleagues and I helped in this event by providing students of Cospicua Primary School with diverse Maltese traditional games.  This event helped me to gain confidence when setting up and promoting such games.  Moreover I found this experience beneficial as it gave me a deeper understanding of how to deliver these traditional games.

I am one of the founders of ‘I Quote Football’.  This is a social media page holding more than 22,000 subscribers. I organise several football tournaments for these subscribers annually.  Generally, these consist of a one-day football tournament with the participation of sixteen teams.  The tournament is considered to be one of the best organised on the island due to the high level of football which it entails.  Organising tournaments helped me to enhance my organisational and managerial skills through extensive work, before as well as during the actual event.  Moreover, these events continued to develop my social and communication skills.
