Organisation and Management of Diverse Activities

First Activity – 3 vs 1 Keep-Away

One of the best activities which worked well with all classes was the exercise called ‘3 vs 1 Keep-Away’.  This exercise involved dividing the class into groups of four.  Each group was provided with a football.  One of four students within each group was provided with a bib to be distinguish from the others.  This learner was the defender.

The court was divided into different sized areas.  Each group worked inside one of these areas but they had to rotate every now and then so as to experience passing, shielding, defending and other football skills in different spaces and situations.

The aim of the defender was to take the ball from the opponents or intercept the attackers’ passes.  On the other hand, the attackers had to do their utmost to avoid the defender from taking the ball.  After some time, the teacher will blew his whistle and the defender shifted role with one of the attackers and so on.  Finally, the teacher called out ‘change’ to indicate that students had to rotate and move to a different area on court.

Second Activity – Shoot Handball at Goal

The activity called ‘Shoot Handball at Goal’ was very useful when introducing shooting and the game situation in handball.  For this exercise the class was divided in four teams and the court was divided in two parts.  Two teams played in one part of the court and the remaining two played in the other.  A team in each court put on bibs.  A student in each court was the goalkeeper and had to defend the goal.  After some time, the goalkeeper changed with an outfield player.

The aim of this game was for children to pass the ball among them while trying to score in the goal by shooting.  Each goal scored was worth one point.  Whenever a goal was scored or the ball was thrown out of play, the team who was defending got the ball and restarted the game by passing the ball from the centreline marked with markers.

Third Activity – Line to Line Football:

Another activity which I utilised in order to introduce passing and dribbling in football was the exercise called ‘Line to Line Football’.  During this activity the class was divided into four teams and the court was split into two parts.  Two teams played in one part of the court and the remaining two played in the second part of the court.  A team in each court put on bibs.  A football was provided for each court with some other balls on the side.  A team scored a point whenever a pre-determined number of consecutive passes were done.  Additionally, the team earned another point if learners managed to stop the ball on the opposite end line behind the defenders.
