My Philosophy
My teaching and learning philosophy is primarily based on the notion of educating the student wholistically and not just bodily movement or physical activity. The subject of Physical Education offers the teacher the possibility of teaching students diverse tactics, techniques, skills and rules related to sports and physical exercise. However I believe that this subject has the power to offer teachers an exclusive opportunity to promote and further each student’s development and welfare. As a physical education teacher I deem that the most fundamental factor which I can instil in my students is the passion for sports and physical activity while guiding them to establish a strong base to be active for life. As the National Curriculum Framework for All states, “the learning experiences that take place during health education activities aim at equipping learners with the necessary knowledge, competencies, skill, attitudes, and values which they need to maintain, promote and enhance physical, emotional, psychological and social well-being throughout their school life and as lifelong learners” (Ministry of Education, Employment and Family, 2012).
Personally I believe that by setting up enjoyable and engaging lessons, Physical Education teachers may eventually expose students to a wide range of sports and physical activities which may serve as a stepping stone towards one of my personal objectives as a teacher. This is aiding children to build effective physical, social, emotional and cognitive skills. These skills will surely result to be fundamental for students all through their life. I can affirm that I will focus on making physical education lessons as fun as possible. I will make sure to focus on the interests and needs of all pupils in order to get them on board through activities which are engaging, avoiding traditional activities which might perpetrate boredom and frustration amongst them.
Certifying adaptation and differentiation in my lessons and activities according to students’ different abilities is also a concept on which I will thoroughly work. I will encourage the learners’ participation throughout my lessons by providing them enough time to ask any queries they may have and by utilising the questioning technique to help them be more focused. I will also be giving children the opportunity for experimentation during activities I set up in order to promote and enhance students’ creativity. They will also be given time to discuss any relevant issues and to solve any difficulties they may be having during the lesson. This is where effective communication skills come in. I will make sure to communicate to students in a comprehensible way, whilst allowing them time to reflect upon what has been said or done, to come up with their own answers and use critical thinking.
Finally, I will surely work hard to guide my students towards accomplishment irrespective of their race, ethnicity, background, religion or nationality. I will never forget the words “I succeeded!” by a learner I was teaching during one of my teaching practice experiences. These words made me realise that I am in the right career and I will never cease from leading children towards personal attainment and feat.
